Woodoku Journey Level 54

๐Ÿ“ Walkthrough

Overview

Level 54 of the Woodoku Journey Halloween Challenge is a 9ร—9 board puzzle where you are given a fixed budget of moves (40 at the start, as shown at the top of the screen) and must clear every dark "target" cell on the board by placing the three wooden pieces shown in the bottom tray. A line clears automatically once every cell in a row or column is filled with wooden blocks. The board starts with roughly two dozen dark outlined target cells scattered across the grid, plus a handful of pre-placed light blocks that already form partial lines. The core approach is to place pieces so that each placement fills as many target cells as possible while simultaneously completing a row or column, recycling board space for the next piece.

  • Difficulty: Regular
  • Estimated moves: 40

Step-by-Step Solution

  1. Study the opening board at move 40. You will see a cluster of dark target cells along the top two rows, a second cluster on the left edge, and a third cluster near the bottom-left and bottom-right corners. The tray initially offers a small L-corner, a vertical 3-block, and a horizontal 4-block. Begin by dragging the vertical 3-block into the leftmost column where three dark cells are stacked vertically (rows 3โ€“5). This immediately covers three target cells and leaves a clean column to build on.
  1. Next, place the horizontal 4-block across the top row, starting under the second column. The top row already has a few pre-placed light blocks on the right side, so a 4-block on the left side of that row extends it toward a future clear. Avoid jamming the 4-block against the right edge yet, because you still need room for L-shaped pieces.
  1. Drop the small L-corner piece into the gap between the top-row cluster and the left-edge cluster. The L-corner fills a 2ร—2 pocket; orient it so its single protruding block points downward into the board center. After this placement, the top-right corner area should show the sparkle animation of a nearly complete row.
  1. After the tray refreshes (you will now be around move 36), you should see a long horizontal bar, a 2ร—2 square, and another L-corner. Place the long horizontal bar along the row that is closest to full. At this point in the video (the frame around 30 seconds), the row on the upper-right lights up with sparkles and clears, opening a wide horizontal corridor.
  1. Use the 2ร—2 square next. Set it into the upper-left 2ร—2 gap that was created by the cleared row. Squares are the most space-efficient pieces on a crowded board, so always park them inside a tight 2ร—2 pocket rather than along a wide open row.
  1. When you reach the mid-game (around move 14, the 33% frame), the board will look half-empty on the left and half-crowded on the right. The dark target cells on the right side remain; your job is to feed pieces into that right-hand zone. Place the tray's 3-block vertical piece into the rightmost column, stacking three of the remaining dark cells.
  1. Around move 7 (the 66% frame), the board is nearly solved. The remaining dark cells form a thin diagonal from upper-middle to lower-right. Take the L-shaped piece in the tray and drop its corner into that diagonal gap, letting its arms extend along the two adjacent rows.
  1. At move 6, you have a T-shaped piece in the tray. Place the T so its bar sits on the row that already has five filled cells and its stem dips into the empty cell below the middle. This triggers a row clear on the upper-middle row.
  1. By move 2, only two placements remain (the frame around 115 seconds). The tray shows a small L with a 2-block bar on the bottom. Place that L into the bottom-left corner pocket, filling the last two dark cells on the lower-left.
  1. At move 1, the final tray piece is a long horizontal 4-block (visible at 130โ€“133 seconds). Drag it to the bottom row, aligning it so its four blocks fill the four empty cells that complete that row. As soon as you release, the row flashes white and clears, the remaining dark target cells vanish in a sparkle animation, and the move counter flips to 0 with a checkmark โ€” Level Complete.

Strategy & Reasoning

The reason this sequence works is that Woodoku Journey levels of this type are essentially "cover the target cells using exactly the pieces you are given." You have 40 moves and roughly 24 dark cells to cover, which means on average each piece must cover about one target cell while also building toward a line clear. If you simply drop pieces wherever they fit, you will run out of space before all targets are covered, which is exactly what happens in the alternate recording for this level (it ends on "NO SPACE LEFT"). The winning recording instead pairs each piece with a partial line so that a clear happens every few placements, freeing space.

The long horizontal bar is the most valuable piece in the whole level. It is best saved for a row that is already half-full, because one bar placement both fills several target cells and triggers a clear. Using the bar early on an empty row wastes that value, which is why the opening steps favor the smaller L and vertical pieces. Squares are the second-most valuable; they should be absorbed into tight 2ร—2 holes rather than stretched along a row, where they occupy two valuable columns for no extra clear bonus.

Finally, notice that the board has more dark cells on the right half than the left. This biases the solution toward working the left half first with vertical pieces (which naturally sit in columns), then sweeping across to the right with horizontal bars. If you reverse the order and start on the crowded right side, you box yourself into narrow gaps that only L-pieces can fill, and you will find yourself with a tray full of straight pieces that no longer fit.

Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Mistake: Dropping the long horizontal bar into an empty open row early. Correct approach: Save the bar for a row that already has 3โ€“4 pre-filled cells, so the placement triggers an immediate line clear.
  • Mistake: Treating the 2ร—2 square like a line piece and laying it across a row. Correct approach: Tuck the square into the tightest 2ร—2 pocket on the board; squares are density pieces, not length pieces.
  • Mistake: Ignoring the move counter and over-filling the board past the point of no return. Correct approach: Watch the counter โ€” once you are inside the last 10 moves, every placement must remove at least one dark cell or trigger a clear; otherwise you will hit "NO SPACE LEFT."
