Woodoku Journey Level 1
๐ Walkthrough
Overview
Level 1 is the opening stage of the Halloween Journey, designed to teach the basic block-placement loop before any real challenge begins. You are presented with a square 9ร9 board that already contains a handful of scattered tan "pre-filled" cells, and you must reach a placement target of 75 cells. Each turn the game deals three wooden shapes from the bottom tray; you drag them onto the grid wherever they legally fit. Whenever an entire row or column becomes completely filled, that line clears away and the blocks you placed are counted toward the 75-cell goal. The overall approach is therefore simple: keep placing pieces compactly, build toward the empty rows, and let the first few line clears carry most of the score.
- Difficulty: Easy
- Estimated moves: 6โ8 piece placements
Step-by-Step Solution
- When the board first loads (progress 0/75), look at the three tray pieces on the bottom bar. On this opening deal the left tray offers a small L-corner, the middle tray offers a compact two-block vertical piece, and the right tray offers a short horizontal domino. Start with the smallest, most flexible piece first so you can adapt the rest of the layout around it.
- Place the left-hand L-corner into the lower-left region of the board, nesting it against the existing tan pre-filled cells rather than out in the open. Dropping it low keeps the center rows โ which you will want to clear โ as open as possible. The snap-to-grid highlight confirms it is seated before you lift your finger.
- Drop the middle two-block vertical piece directly beneath that corner, extending the little cluster downward. This begins to form a near-complete column in the bottom-left. Because the column only needs a couple more cells, you are effectively "charging" a clear for the next turns.
- Place the right-hand horizontal domino into the bottom row next to your cluster, bridging toward the center. The bottom row now has a run of filled cells that nearly reaches across. Watch the progress tick jump from 0 to about 4 after these first three placements.
- On the next deal, a larger shape appears. Set it down in the middle band of the board, aiming its long edge parallel to the rows you are trying to complete. Match the empty gaps to the shape's outline rather than forcing a square block into a crooked corner; Woodoku will show a red ghost where it cannot fit, so re-drag until the ghost turns normal.
- Continue filling the central rows with the second tray piece. By this point the board has progressed to roughly 16/75, and one of the middle rows should be only one cell short of completion. Whenever a piece you place completes a row, watch it slide and vanish โ that is a line clear, and the cleared cells are credited to the 75 total.
- Work the third tray piece into the remaining gap in that near-complete row to deliberately trigger a clear. The row sweeps away, opening a large empty band across the board and giving you room for the next, bigger shapes. Do not chase multiple clears at once early on; one clean row at a time is enough for Level 1.
- As the deal refreshes, keep placing the offered pieces into the growing mass in the lower half, deliberately stacking along the columns that already have several filled cells. The board climbs from about 46/75 through 68/75 as these placements land.
- When you are close to the target, reserve the small tray pieces (single blocks or short dominoes) for the last remaining holes. The larger shapes should already be on the board; use the tiny pieces to plug the final one-cell gaps. The progress bar races to 75/75.
- The moment the counter hits 75, the board dims and a large "WELL DONE!" banner appears over the grid. That is the level-complete state โ tap through it to claim the reward and continue the journey.
Strategy & Reasoning
The reason this level behaves so forgivingly is that the target (75 cells) is reached well before the board ever becomes crowded enough to trap you. In Woodoku, the only way to actually lose is to run out of legal space on the grid; on Level 1 the pre-filled cells are sparse and the shapes are small, so you never approach that failure condition. The smart play is to place pieces where they extend existing runs toward a row or column clear, because each clear both removes blocks and resets that line to empty, giving you a fresh band to work with.
A common reflex in a fresh board is to spread pieces out to "cover" more of the grid. That looks productive, but it actually delays clears: scattered blocks rarely combine into a complete row, while clustered blocks in one or two rows convert into a clear within a couple of turns. By concentrating the first several placements in the lower-left and middle band, the board fills a handful of rows to completion quickly, and those clears carry the score forward. Alternatives โ for example, dropping every piece in the upper-right โ leave the lower rows empty and force you to waste later pieces just to backfill.
Finally, reserving small pieces for the end matters because the large L- and corner shapes are rigid and cannot squeeze into one-cell holes. If you use a big shape to fill a single missing cell, you waste the rest of that shape's footprint and clog the board. Plugging the final gaps with the domino/single-block pieces keeps the whole grid tidy and guarantees the last few placements land.
Tips & Common Mistakes
- Mistake: spreading pieces all over the board to "use" the space. Fix: cluster the first placements in 1โ2 rows so a row fills and clears within a few turns; one early clear opens up the whole board.
- Mistake: dropping a large shape wherever it first fits, then finding it blocks a needed row. Fix: always check which row/column your piece is extending, and aim it so that it brings a near-complete line closer to clearing instead of just occupying empty cells.
- Mistake: saving the small pieces for later and forcing a big L-shape into a one-cell gap. Fix: place the largest tray piece first on each deal, then use the small domino/single-block pieces to plug the final holes โ that is the order visible in the level's successful clear.
