Woodoku Journey Level 42
๐ Walkthrough
Overview
Woodoku Journey Level 42 is a Halloween block puzzle on a 9ร9 wood-grain board with a single focused objective: collect 11 envelopes. Envelopes are delivered by the red mailbox boxes fixed in a cluster toward the center-left of the board, and each one is harvested when you complete a row or column running through a mailbox cell. You drag wood shapes from the bottom tray in sets of three; any fully completed row or column clears away. The win condition is the envelope counter reaching zero, and the run is lost when a tray piece cannot be placed.
- Difficulty: Regular
- Estimated moves: ~25
Step-by-Step Solution
- At the 40-second opening the envelope counter reads 11. Three red mailboxes sit clustered in the center-left, with open space above, below, and to the right of them. The tray offers a 3-cell corner piece and a cross-shaped 5-piece.
- Start by placing the cross piece in the open center just to the right of the mailbox cluster. Its wide footprint begins filling the rows and columns that pass through the mailboxes without covering the special cells themselves.
- Use the 3-cell corner piece in the upper-left open pocket to anchor that corner, keeping the mailbox rows clear for targeted fills.
- Feed short horizontal bars into the two rows that contain the mailboxes. Because all three boxes share roughly the same two rows, completing either row harvests multiple envelopes at once.
- By the 79-second frame the counter has dropped to 6 and the board is around 45% filled. The cluster of mailboxes is now ringed by placed blocks, and several rows through them have cleared.
- Continue building down the columns beneath the mailbox cluster. As the upper rows clear, new space opens, and you extend the columns downward so that vertical lines through the lower mailboxes can complete.
- At the final frame (around 119 seconds) the counter reads 4 and the board is close to full. The remaining four envelopes sit behind half-built lines that no longer have the open room needed to finish. The reference attempt does not reach the win state.
Strategy & Reasoning
The mailbox cluster is the whole puzzle here. With 11 envelopes concentrated in a small central-left area, the optimal approach is to treat the cluster as a hub and build outward only enough to complete its rows and columns. The reference run does this reasonably โ the counter falls 11 โ 6 โ 4 โ proving that servicing the mailbox rows is the right engine.
The error is overfilling the outer board. Once a few mailbox rows clear, the player keeps dropping pieces into the far edges, which consumes the open lanes needed to finish the remaining vertical lines. On a single-objective level you should resist the urge to "fill the board" and instead finish the mailbox lines one by one, clearing before you add more blocks on top.
Tips & Common Mistakes
- Mistake: spreading pieces to all four corners early. Correct: keep every new piece within the rows and columns that touch the mailbox cluster.
- Mistake: leaving the mailboxes half-surrounded. Correct: build a complete ring around the cluster so that adjacent rows and columns can clear in sequence.
- Mistake: using long bars on empty edges. Correct: long bars go directly into the rows that are one piece away from clearing a mailbox.
